Whoa, there sure is a lot of misinformation floating around out there!!! First of all, e-files do not ruin your nails. They are not the problem. The problem is techs who have not been properly trained and certified in the use of an e-file on nails. It takes a lot of practice, and a good amount of training to use an e-file correctly. Techs who are proficient in their use won't do any damage to the natural nail. I'd like to point out the fact that a 100/150 grit file is not by any means a 'normal' file. Using a 100 grit file on natural nails causes a great deal of damage to the natural nail. With regards to hand files, the best grit to use on natural nails is a 240 grit. Anyway, to answer your question, if you are looking for a high quality e-file, be prepared to spend at least $375-$400 on the low end, and upwards of $500+ for a high end e-file. There are a few models that are less expensive. Choosing the right e-file for you depends on a few things - two of them being how often you plan to use the e-file, and the type of products used (UV gel, or acrylics - or both). Identifying your needs will help you to choose an appropriate e-file. As I mentioned, I feel it is very important that techs who plan on using an e-file first get the necessary training and certification before going out and buying one. Going under the assumption that you are already qualified to use an e-file, here are my recommendations. There are several companies which make top of the line e-files. At the top of that list are these two companies: Kupa, and Erica's.The e-files made by these two companies are used by more prodesional techs than any other brands, hands down. When purchasing an e-file, you should consider first and foremost the quality of the handpiece which a particular model uses. The handpieve represents about 2/3 of the total cost of an e-file, so choosing one that works well for you is very important. The motor is located in the handpiece, and if its of inferior quality, it will vibrate too much, and/or not habe enough torque (power) to get the job done. OK, having said that, here are a couple of links for you to use for researching various e-files. Kupa makes seeral high end e-files. They also make a low cost/low quality line of e-files which I do not recommend to anyone (the bottom rung 'Mani-Pro's). Generally, any Kupa made e-file which comes with the KP-36 handpiece is a safe bet. This is a very high quality handpiece, and it is very reliable as well. The other link is to Erica's. They make the MT-20. This is a favorite of many, many nail technicians. Why? Because it is a great product that outperforms just about anything out there, its quiet, it has little to no vibration, and its small, thin, and well balanced too! This makes for an excellent e-file, no doubt about that! However, these things don't come cheap. An Erica MT-20 costs an average of $425. Depending on where you purchase it from, this may vary slightly, but not by a real lot. One thing I should mention. I know that e-files are available on ebay but try to resist the urge to buy one from that site. There are many fakes being sold, and its just not worth the risk of being ripped off. Instead, buy from a reputable distributor which is located here in the U.S. and make sure they are a factory authorized dealer. This is very important. There are some companis selling e-files that are not authorized dealers which you really don't want to do business with. One last thing. On the Kupa site, you will see an e-gile called the Super UP-200. This is not a Kupa made e-file, but it is without any doubt one of the very best e-files available. The downside is the handpiece that is a tad bit heavy and bulky. While this is fine for many techs, some techs with smaller hands may find the handpiece to be a bit much for them. The Kupa 3000 is a very good e-file which would last you a lifetime. Lots of techs have them, and are very satisfied with them as they are reliable, and they last for many years. Overall, my vote - and this is only a personal preference, goes to the Erica MT-20. I have one, and I love it! The hand[iece is perfectly balanced, it is very powerful, lightweight, and very slim too. Plus, the control box has a built-in 'cruise' control in it. This functions as a device which monitors the speed of the bit and keeps it at a constant, steady RPM. When it detects the bit is slowing down, it will automatically speed it up for you. Anyway, here are the links. I hope this helps!
